Fresher's Nite - Report by Mononeeta Law

Following the age-old tradition, the seniors got their act together – literally! With Dracula (Dramatics and Cultural Association) at the helm, the talented seniors worked very hard and finally the magic was unleashed upon the juniors on Friday night as they were caught up in one entertaining performance after another.

The juniors were asked to assemble on the JLT, from where they moved into the Small Audi for the performance. And oh what a performance it was!

There was the Jive, with Sukant and Indira leading the rest which was a really well-coordinated dance (definitely as compared to the others). And then the fusion dance with “Phanaa”, the latest hit Yuva number, where Priya and Ashwini looked absolutely elegant in the traditional Indian postures. And then of course the YMCA, with Hari, Sukant, Jayan and Harsh, which had all the girls screaming for more. Jayan was as always out of sync with the rest… but then that’s Jayan for you.

And then there were the songs with the XL band backing them up. Needless to mention that no performance by them is ever complete without the powerful music from Payel’s violin, as they rendered a superb performance of a self-composition called “Last Mile”…christened so by Dhunta!.

And finally not to mention, a wonderfully written play by Pappu, the creative head of RadioSMAXI – there was wild applause all around, not to mention the catcalls thrown in.

Of course, no Juniors’ Nite is complete without a sumptuous dinner. And so while the juniors sat at the tables, we ensured that they were dined adequately. It was almost 3:00 a.m when we called it a day.

Admittedly, it was a hot and humid night, especially now that the monsoons have started creeping into Jamshedpur and the juniors were all in suits and sarees, and there was an entire batch and half of another crammed inside the Auditorium and some of the juniors and seniors have a quiz today (including me!) – but that’s the bonding that will forever make XLRI stand apart.

Music Scene -

During our daze we had a full fledged outfit called "the shootingstarz" with Prashant (who is full time into music generation now in bbay) on the lead guitar and vocals, most of your mobile ring tonez must be his creation. IG and Paddy on the bass, we had a whole lotta cronner chix doing alynis morriset and celine dion ( who was rocking the charts those daze) we had nandita d'cunah on the keyboards straight from nowhere else but london school of music and me the spastic on the drums and vocals.

when we furst unleashed our dark music - Ready for Love by Bad Company (which went on to be some kinda XL rock anthem by the time I graduated) in the enright hall, which has the most faboulous accoustix for an electric band I remembur the faces in the audience......all mouths open, and when we finished the song there was pin drop scilence for a couple of secondz while the audience was trying to figure out what these roxtarz were doing in a priemier bschool and then they clapped and they didnt wanna stop....knocking on heavens door followed aftur the clapping stopped and then it was Hotel and Evil Waze,Sweet Child o Mine, freefalling and with or without you, with a celine dion and a morrisette thrownin like....

the grax is that XL didnt have a band ever since.....so before you call a band like indian ocean ( Who will put you guyz off to sleep) for the XL IIMC rock shock try getting all ov us togther and the violinist can also jam up wid us....and tell the reception commitee that two of the band memburs are x OMaxi.

Law, one thing you forgot was the warm hospitality which the senior batch bestowed upon us - both while serving us dinner as well as while serving us the "drinks".

Each day passing by at XLRI has its own set of sweet surprises. That's why when I talked to most XLers about their alma mater (I talked to Anurag Behar in Wipro and Vishy Shenoy of Biryani Merchant before coming here), the thing that comes out invariably is the bonding and the tradition. And I am seeing that happen in front of my eyes.

Could someone please compile a list of all the associations/societies at XL and keep it updated on any of the Alumni website..is the title "LOUT of the YEAR" still a part of the tradition?
